About Gandhi Jayanti
Gandhi Jayanti on 2 October marks the birth of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi in 1869 at Porbandar, Gujarat. It is a national holiday in India and, since 2007, the United Nations' International Day of Non-Violence.
The day is observed with prayers at Raj Ghat, the singing of 'Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram', and cleanliness drives under Swachh Bharat. 2 October is also the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri.
